A River named Arkavathi…..
The River Arkavathi originates at Nandi Hills in Chikkaballapur District and flows south passing through Nagarakere of Doddaballapur, Hesaraghatta, Thippagondanahalli reservoir and joins River Cauvery at the Sangama near Kanakapura.
People living in this region are now aware that they actually live in the watershed of the River which was flowing once upon a time.

This river provides water for thousands of acres of agricultural land and drinking water to humans and animals. About 100 years back, Bangalore city was totally dependent on Hessaraghatta lake. Later the dependency shifted upon the Thippagondanahalli reservoir and then to River Cavery.

Present condition of ‘River Arkavathi’?

Due to urbanization, change in agricultural practices as well as lifestyle, the River is drying up and getting polluted. It is in a precarious situation due to encroachment of canals and river bed, combined with the disposal of effluents by industries and solid waste by CMCs and BBMP.

Save the River Arkavathi Campaign

During the Karnataka Jalachetana Yatra in 2003, there was a cry among the community to rejuvenate the River. A few organization and peoples’ group got together to protect the River. These efforts and demand from the people has now resulted in the government too recognizing and involving in rejuvenation of the River.

What can we do to save the ‘River Arkavathi’?

In order to ensure success of rejuvenation of the River, farmers, villagers and town dwellers need to work together. It is the responsibility of the people to ensure that the programme of the government gets implemented properly. For this to happen, there is a need to awaken the community which can be done by a group of service minded people or volunteers. YOU can contribute in rejuvenating the River within your own capacity like talking writing about it, involving in physical work- shramadan, etc. Can YOU be one such volunteer? If YES, provide your contact details and be a part of the volunteer’s camp which will be held once in every three months.
